Course Overview

The Level 3 Academic Hybrid Programme is designed for learners with a non-traditional or disrupted educational background who prefer or require a more flexible approach to learning. It offers the opportunity to complete one full A Level in Sociology over the course of a single academic year, with optional additional subjects available through our Full-time GCSE Programme or the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

The course is delivered primarily online, offering flexibility and independence. Learners will also take part in occasional in-person seminars or masterclasses, typically once or twice per half term, where they will engage in full-day, small-group sessions to consolidate learning and apply their skills through collaborative activities.

Students follow the WJEC Eduqas A Level Sociology specification.

Course Requirements

While our standard A Level entry requirements apply (5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English Language and maths), the Academic Hybrid Programme is designed with flexibility in mind.

We welcome applicants who have:
– At least GCSE English Language and maths
– An average GCSE score of 5.5 or higher

Entry is subject to:
– A reference and discussion with your previous school or college
– An in-person interview with curriculum staff and the Inclusion Team

What you will Learn

A Level Sociology gives you the tools to explore the structure of society and understand the social forces that shape human behaviour. You’ll study a range of key topics, including:
– Youth Culture – Investigate how youth identities are formed and expressed in contemporary society
– Education – Examine the role of education in maintaining or challenging social order
– Crime and Deviance – Explore why people break rules, how society responds, and the wider implications
– Stratification – Understand how class, gender, and ethnicity contribute to inequality and affect life chances

Assessment

Your learning will be assessed through three externally examined components at the end of the academic year:
– Component 1: 120 marks (40% of final grade)
– Component 2: 60 marks (20% of final grade)
– Component 3: 120 marks (40% of final grade)
The exams are essay-based and test your ability to apply, analyse, and evaluate sociological ideas and arguments.

Progression

Many learners progress from this course to study Sociology or related disciplines at university. The skills developed in critical thinking, research, and communication are valuable across a wide range of careers, including:
– Counselling
– Social Work
– Youth Work

The Academic Hybrid Programme also provides a gentle reintroduction to academic study. Successful students may progress into our mainstream A Level programme to complete two additional A Levels.
