Course Overview

This course will help students build confidence in creative self-expression through storytelling. Each week focuses on a key element of short story writing – Who (character), Where (setting), and What (plot). Students will develop their own ideas through step-by-step activities and have the option to submit a 500-word story for our World Book Day Short Story Competition. Sessions encourage imagination, discussion, and sharing ideas in a supportive environment.

This course will be held at Stretford Library, Bennett St, Stretford, Manchester M32 8AP

Course Requirements

No formal qualifications are required. This course is suitable for adults aged 19+ who have an interest in creative writing or wish to build confidence in expressing themselves through words. Basic English reading and writing skills are helpful but not essential – support will be provided as needed.

What you will Learn

Explore how to create interesting characters and understand the role of a protagonist
Learn how to describe settings and build atmosphere in a story
Understand how to structure a simple plot with a clear beginning, middle, and end
Use prompts and guided activities to generate story ideas
Build confidence in talking about their writing and sharing feedback
Develop and draft a short-written piece suitable for the World Book Day competition

Assessment

This course is informally assessed through participation, discussion, and short writing activities. Students will receive ongoing feedback from the tutor in a supportive environment. There is no formal exam or written test.

Progression

Students can progress to:

Functional Skills English (Entry-Level to Level 2)

Other community learning courses such as Confidence Building, Digital Skills, or ESOL with a creative focus

Career Options
